A new prescription drugmaker is selling its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra on the black market, saying it has been doing so for more than a decade. The drug has been available in generic form since 1998, but its maker, Merck, says it's not offering a generic version.
The prescription drug giant, based in New York, says that it sells the drug to doctors for less than $3 a pill.
But the price is not what the generic drug is supposed to be. It's the same generic that's sold to many people, such as a doctor or pharmacist. And while some generic versions can be cheaper, they don't always work the same way.
The drugmaker has also stopped selling its drug in the United States, where it's been in business for more than a decade.
"We believe that there's a strong likelihood that it will work for some people," Dr. David Shomon, a professor of urology at Johns Hopkins Medicine, told The Associated Press.
"The idea of a generic drug for a drug, in any particular case, is going to be a pretty difficult one," said Shomon, who wrote a book on urology called "The Rise of Viagra."
Merck said it wasn't aware of any problems, but it believes it's working on a plan to give the generic drug to patients who are able to afford the brand-name version. The company also said it's working on a new drug for people who need it.
Merck also sells its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. It also has a number of other drugs, including a blood pressure medicine, another drug for high blood pressure and another drug for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Merck says it has a full list of people who may be able to get a generic version of the drug. The company also offers the drug on a sliding fee scale, with the higher the amount, the lower the per-pill cost. The price for a generic drug varies depending on dosage and whether it's included in the prescription drug-formulation package.
The company says it can't test the drug for safety and efficacy and can't even say whether the medication will work for all men. The drug has not been approved for use by a doctor or pharmacist.
"We've been trying to try to get it approved as many times as we can," said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, who is chief of urology at Irwin Goldstein International. He's chief of the urologic and cardiology department at the University of Virginia Medical School.
"We've been trying to make it as convenient as possible, especially for everybody who's looking to be sure that the effect is safe and that everybody is taking it."
When Merck first discovered the problem, it was so excited about the drug that he decided to make the drug available in generic form.
He said he was surprised by how many people were buying the drug when he told them to.
He said he would try to get the drug through the U. S. mail. "I can tell you," he said, "that it has been in my pharmacy for 10 years."
Merck said it won't change the fact that Viagra is now a prescription drug and that it has not made any effort to offer a generic version of the drug.
The company has also not made any effort to make Viagra available on the market.
But Merck said it's "playing by the same tried and tested" pattern as the generic drug company, which is based in North Dakota.
The company will begin selling a generic version of Viagra sometime in the second half of the year. If it reaches the U. market, it will have the drug available on a monthly basis.
If the company has an offer for the drug, it will pay a $10 co-pay to the patient or pharmacist for the drug.
It also will pay the same price as a generic drug, with the full price included in the drug package.
If the drug's price is $3 or less, the generic drug is sold as a pill, taken as a shot, and then sold at the same price as the branded drug.
Many people, including those with diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, buy the generic drug as a pill and can save up to 80 percent on their prescriptions. But Merck says it may be too expensive for some patients.
"This is a drug that should be sold in pharmacies to physicians and other health care professionals for less than $3," said Dr.
