A group of Brazilian law firms have been found to be paying a criminal fine of more than $2 billion, according to an internal memo filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
A criminal complaint has been filed against the group’s owners and executives claiming they had improperly marketed their online sales platform, according to the complaint.
The company, which has over the years been a major player in the lucrative online and retail market for pharmaceuticals, said it has been paying $1.5 billion in fines and other penalties since 2010. The memo states that its business was driven by “several key factors, including the company’s illegal activities, the company’s strong and aggressive promotion practices and a willingness to pay fines on each of the company’s products,” according to the complaint.

“The company has continued to conduct its business using a ‘product-by-product’ approach and practices consistent with international law,” it says.
The group also accused the company of “illegal conduct” by selling unapproved or counterfeit versions of a popular drug that has become one of the world’s top sellers, according to the memo.
In 2014, the company’s website also claimed that it had been selling unapproved and counterfeit versions of its popular Viagra and Cialis tablets.
In a statement, the group said, “We are committed to reporting and investigating all known and unknown violations of laws, regulations and procedures,” including “this matter, and to reporting any suspicious activities.”
